If A Physician Feels Better

If a Physician Feels Better…

What exactly happens when a physician feel better?

Ahhhh….I thought you’d never ask!

You might think that they have more time to journal, cozied upon in their comfy chair sipping tea (or mocha!), reflecting on the meaning of life (+/- cute kitty).

You might think they feel less stressed at work, perhaps not sweating the small stuff (and even clearly knowing the difference between the small stuff and the not-so-small stuff!)

You might even think that they have more family engagement with improved and more frequent quality time (and actually being fully present during it).

Yeah…you might think all those things. And you’d be right. But let me assure you: there’s plenty more where that came from.

When physicians feel better, they start taking better care of themselves. Without compromise.

They eat lunch (even while at work—gasp!) if they want to.

They schedule and keep wellness appointments (like primary care and dental visits) for themselves.

They leave work when they planned to instead of doing “just one more thing”.

They even give up bad habits like over drinking alcohol or binging on unhealthy food.

And they probably even stick with an exercise plan (even going so far as to enjoy exercise, believe it or not).

As if these results (even just one of them alone) don’t speak for themselves, physicians who feel better start setting goals again, which fills them with hope and possibility and excitement: vacation goals, retirement goals, bucket lists, goal of learning a new skill or taking up a new hobby, etc.

And they make better decisions just by feeling better. And the results of those decisions? You guessed it: better.

And when a physician experiences any or all of these results…they’re probably going to feel even better.
And when a physician feels better, they’re probably going to…

What will you do when you feel better?
